At some point I needed this project to be over (for now).Ī fantasy rapid transit map for Greater New York City, made in Inkscape and using a recent MTA subway map as a base. Honestly to make that look readable I would've had to choose a completely different map style (like for example the new Vignelli3.0 map the MTA is piloting). and there's the cop-out answer, which is that tbqh I kind of gave up trying, given how much of a mess my drafts made of the east side of Manhattan. The transformative impact it would have on outer borough transit access (particularly in the Bronx and Queens) + the ability to have better and faster express capacity through the city would be worth it (and, given how much of a revolution the RER and Crossrail have been in terms of regional transit access, even a fraction of that would make a huge difference in NY) Like, if I had to choose what I would prioritize on this, it would without a doubt being the X-rail construction + through-running + fare integration (such that a ride on them would cost the same as the subway in the city + offer free transfers). At the end of the day, I think I would prioritize some of these things over the rest of the 2 Av Subway (particularly in the form the MTA currently proposes it - with missed connections to the JZ in the Lower East Side and with a terminus far away from the big downtown connections - Fulton, etc.).
